The 22-year-old made his first appearance since October in United's 2-0 win over Ajax in the Europa League last week, and the former greats believe he has what it takes to become a "real top player".

"When I first started my coaching badges at United with [Paul] Scholes, [Gary] Neville, [Ryan] Giggs and [Roy] Keane, they were the team we were taking as 15-year-olds then.

"He was always a bright talent and, since he's been on loan, he's come back and been phenomenal really.

"He kneeds to keep working hard at it. I'm sure he will as he comes across as a good lad and he needs to listen to the manager, coaches and experienced pros.

"He can go anywhere really, he's got that much ability. Cleverley is a much better technical footballer than I ever was. It just goes to show how it's moving on with these players."

Meanwhile, Robson admitted that he was disappointed to see the midfielder pick up the injury which has blighted a large period his season, but hopes that he will fulfill his undoubted potential.

"Tom has done great," Robson told MUTV. "He's been very unfortunate with the injury side of it.

"He could have made a real name for himself as he was getting there but he's got time on his side.

"We know he's got great ability. He's got to build his reputation up and hopefully he'll become the real top player that a lot of people think he is going to be."
