Manchester United ask Trafford Council to reject Gary Neville hotel scheme

MANCHESTER United are aiming to kick into touch a bid by Gary Neville to open a hotel and supporters' club next to Old Trafford.

The former United captain wants to open a 10-storey 139-bedroom hotel and leisure centre on Sir Matt Busby Way.

A planning application was submitted in December in the name of Old Trafford Supporters' Club (OTSC), whose members would have use of the facilities.

But Manchester United have sent in a letter calling for Trafford's planning chiefs to show the red card to the scheme.

The letter highlights a number of concerns - including parking issues, highway safety and the size of the complex, claiming it would block out views of the ground.

The club is concerned that it is proposed that the facility will be restricted to use by supporters' club members, and not opened to the general public.

it also downplays the relationship between Manchester United and OTSC, saying it is merely one of more than 180 supporters' clubs recognised by the club so the relationship is not unique.

The letter says even if these issues are addressed "MUFC shall continue to oppose and object to the proposed scheme due to: the impact of its scale and massing on views towards the stadium's principal East Stand elevation; the potential impact of the drop-off point and the removal of the left hand turn onto Sir Matt Busby Way on highway safety, and the potential impact on the club's holistic vision for the continuing enhancement of the area surrounding the stadium."

The scheme, a joint application between OTSC and Neville - who retired last season - is expected to be considered by planning chiefs next month.
