Manchester United fans believe Tom Cleverly is perfect Paul Scholes replacement - GiveMeFootball.com

With Paul Scholes set to retire again at the end of the season, expect the summer months to be dominated by speculation about who will succeed the 37-year-old at Old Trafford.

Scholes ended his illustrious Manchester United career last May, but opted to return in January in order to ease Sir Alex Ferguson's midfield crisis.

This is, of course, merely a short-term solution for the Premier League champions, who found themselves wanting a creative midfield influence during Scholes' five-month absence.

Last summer, Wesley Sneijder was seen as the ideal man to replace Scholes but, for whatever reason, the Inter Milan playmaker did not move to Old Trafford.

In more recent weeks, United have seen themselves linked with teenage duo Mario Gotze and Christian Eriksen with increasing regularity.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been happy to admit he is, at the very least, intrigued by Ajax starlet Eriksen, while the agent of Borussia Dortmund's Gotze claims Manchester United are interested in his client.

However, as strong as the calls for Ferguson to reinforce his midfield have been, he has also been urged to give youth a chance and afford someone already in his ranks the opportunity to replace Scholes.

The player on United's books most well-equipped to do so would appear to be Tom Cleverley and, it would seem, the 22-year-old is already an incredibly popular figure with the Old Trafford faithful.

According to a poll conducted by Givemefootball.com, Cleverley is seen as Scholes' ideal successor, with 54 percent of fans believing the English youngster is the veteran's perfect replacement.

Of over 12,000 votes cast, Gotze was the second most popular with supporters - polling 18 percent - while Sneijder was not far behind.

The Dutchman's popularity would appear to be on the wane, having won only 17 percent of the vote, while Eriksen was afford just six percent.

Tottenham star Luka Modric has also been touted as a potential Scholes successor, but he took just four percent of the vote, while a mere one percent of fans would like none of the above in United's midfield.

Cleverley, meanwhile, is now back in action after several months on the sidelines and now has the opportunity to repay the faith of Red Devils supporters.
