Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed he is unconcerned over the impact the Europa League will have in the Red Devils' Premier League form.

The England international reiterated his desire for the Old Trafford club to win what is considered Europe's second tier trophy, as they have never won it.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side would have to play eight more tough knockout ties if they are to win the competition, added to the 13 more league fixtures they must play, but Rooney does not believe it will be a problem.

"I've no concerns about it hindering our progress in the league, not at all," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

"I'm really looking forward to the rest of this competition. It's a new challenge for all of us.

"There's no point being in a competition if you aren't going to try and win it and the manager has shown he is going to put out strong teams.

"It would be great to be the first United team to win this trophy, and that's our aim."

United are currently half way through a round of 32 side with Dutch side Ajax – they are likely to progress after winning 2-0 in the first leg in Amsterdam.

The return leg at Old Trafford takes place this coming Thursday and Ferguson is likely to rest some of his more established stars ahead of their trip to Carrow Road and to take on Norwich City in Sunday.
